EC Risk: Appendicitis show details
This module reviews the typical presentation of appendicitis with the symptom of right lower-quadrant pain in otherwise healthy patients. Atypical presentations are also reviewed, including patients who present to the Emergency Department early in the disease process, those with atypical anatomy, and those at extremes of age. These presentations determine radiological indications and inform the appropriate treatment pathway. Interprofessional communication within the care team is also addressed. In cases where appendicitis is diagnosed, it is also easily treated with surgery. Appendicitis becomes high-risk in cases when it is not diagnosed. In order to decrease risk, the learner practices delivering effective discharge instructions to patients and their family members.
