MedStar Health Clinical Practice Guideline for the Management of Obstetrical Hemorrhage show details
Obstetric hemorrhage remains one of the leading causes of severe maternal morbidity and mortality in the world. Although several well-known risk factors have been associated with postpartum hemorrhage, many women without these risk factors can also experience hemorrhages. Since postpartum women can quickly lose large volumes of blood due to the physiological changes of pregnancy, rapid recognition, and treatment are needed. Systematic protocols for screening, improving readiness, recognizing and responding to hemorrhage have demonstrated improved outcomes such as decreased use of both blood products and higher-level interventions such as uterine artery embolization and hysterectomy.
