Postpartum Hemorrhage. show details
Background:
Postpartum hemorrhage that leads to blood transfusion is the leading cause of severe maternal morbidity in the US;
Rate of postpartum hemorrhage increased 26% between 1994 and 2006 (primarily due to increased atony);
Accounts for slightly more than 10% of maternal mortalities;
Mortality rates from PPH are decreasing (currently approximately 1.7 deaths per 100,000 live births);
By the time a patient has tachycardia/hypotension, significant blood loss (up to 25% of total blood volume) has already occurred.
