SLP Research Roundtable: Understanding “Memory perfectionism” and concussion recovery (Picon, 2022)
Description
This course is designed to expand occupational therapists, physical therapists, and speech language pathologists’ foundational knowledge re: concussion presentations and factors impacting recovery. As defined Picon (2022) “Memory Perfectionism is Associated with Persistent Memory Complaints after Concussion”, “memory perfectionism” refers to the combination of a strongly valued memory ability and an intolerance for minor memory lapses. This presentation will explore the hypothesis that individuals with higher levels of memory perfectionism—holding themselves to exceptionally high standards of memory performance—are more prone to report severe memory issues after a concussion. Participants will engage in a literature review of Picon (2022) and discuss the clinical implications for assessment and intervention strategies in PT/OT/SLP treatment of concussion. In this session, participants will engage in a roundtable discussion about how to best serve our patients with concussion within PT, OT, and SLP services.
Suggested Audience: SLP, PT, OT
