SLP Research Roundtable: Management of Cough Disorders
Description
Cough is a vital protective mechanism and clinical indicator across numerous medically complex conditions. This session will provide a structured review and discussion of the article "Cough: An Introductory Guide for Speech-Language Pathologists" by Novaleski et al. (2023), which highlights the growing role of SLPs in the nonpharmacological management of cough disorders. We will review the basics of the coughing mechanism and examine how SLPs can assess and treat reduced or heightened cough reflexes, with implications across diverse clinical populations. Practical applications for outpatient and medically complex patients will be emphasized.
