Through scenario based learning the module emphasizes tracking and trending, using the Cerner MedConnect System, to visualize subtle vital sign changes over time and identify when a patient is deteriorating. EMTALA requires hospitals that participate in Medicare and operate emergency departments to:
Provide a medical screening exam to anyone who comes to the emergency department, regardless of insurance status or ability to pay.
Stabilize patients with an emergency medical condition (including women in active labor) before transferring or discharging them.
Arrange an appropriate transfer if the hospital cannot provide the necessary treatment.
Purpose:
The law was designed to prevent “patient dumping,” where hospitals refused care or transferred patients based on lack of insurance or financial resources.

Title III of the ADA prohibits discrimination against qualified individuals with disabilities in the full and equal enjoyment of the goods, services, facilities, privileges, advantages, or accommodations of any place of public accommodation (including hospitals and other medical care sites).
Covered entities must permit the presence of a Support Person when needed for individuals who have disabilities that affect their ability to communicate in a healthcare setting in order to comply with the ADA.
Patients with certain disabilities may require the presence of a Support Person in order to allow for equal care for the patient, including in order to process relevant medical information or make healthcare-related decisions, aid comprehension, and /or fully communicate.
