Objectives

  • Initiate IV fluids in sick neonates.
  • Identify the neonate at risk for developing hypglycemia and symptoms of hypoglycemia
  • Understand IV fluid treatment of hypoglycemia and the post-treatment evaluation of hypoglycemia.
  • Understand the detrimental effects of cold stress.
  • Identify infants at higher risk for becoming hypothermic.
  • Recognize ways infants lose body heat and be more knowledgeable about protecting the neonate against cold stress.
  • Understand the process for warming severely hypothermic infants.
  • Understand the basic evaluation of neonatal respiratory distress.
  • Understand indications for positive pressure ventilation with bag and mask or endotracheal intubation.
