This module reviews the appropriate identification of spinal cord compression and the applicable patient management. Emphasis is placed upon the recognition of risk factors, the essential nature of imaging to detect the condition, and the need for coordinated interprofessional care. Effective communication with the healthcare team as well as the patient and family is discussed. show less
Objectives
- Identify the four main causes of spinal cord compression
- Identify risk factors for spinal cord compression, based on patient history and physical exam
- Apply assessment findings to categorize risk as low, intermediate, or high
- Use risk categorization to guide diagnostic testing
- Choose appropriate treatment pathway after assessment is complete
- Demonstrate communication skills to foster trust and earn cooperation from patients
- Communicate the urgency of cord compression diagnosis to an interprofessional team, in order to coordinate timely patient care
