This module reviews how to manage precipitous delivery in the emergency department, including normal vaginal delivery, and the various complications that could arise. Those complications include nuchal cord, preterm delivery, postpartum hemorrhage, breech presentation, and shoulder dystocia. Emphasis is placed on how to clinically manage the
various complications, how to effectively communicate with an interprofessional team, and prepare care team members to reduce risk in this high-stress, fast-paced situation. show less
Objectives
- ●Identify which patients need to deliver in the Emergency Department and which can be safely transferred
- ● Identify the most accurate way to date a pregnancy
- ● Demonstrate how to appropriately manage the following complications: nuchal cord, preterm delivery, postpartum hemorrhage, breech presentation, and shoulder dystocia
- ● Describe features of an extremely premature infant and list criteria that help predict the outcome of a premature infant
- ● Demonstrate effective communication skills needed to work effectively on an interprofessional team
- ● Demonstrate communication skills that maintain a calm environment while clearly verbalizing the identified complication and plan
