This module provides an overview of various aspects of concussion diagnosis and management. Signs and symptoms, risk factors, and diagnostic considerations are discussed. Core questions are addressed to improve management and diagnosis, and decrease the risk associated with concussion. Case studies highlight the issues faced by clinicians working in the emergency room setting. show less
Objectives
- Define concussion
- Use evidence-based criteria to determine who needs imaging in order to confirm or deny a more serious or life-threatening diagnosis (PECARN Head Trauma Algorithm, Canadian CT Head Trauma Rule and Canadian C-Spine Rule)
- Facilitate shared decision-making between the care team, patient and the patient’s family
- Deliver appropriate discharge instructions to ensure proper follow-up care
