AWHONN’s Perinatal Orientation and Education Program (POEP, 2009) is designed to provide nurses with the theoretical knowledge needed to provide holistic family-centered care to women, their infants, and family members during the preconception, ante partum, intrapartum, and postpartum periods. It is targeted toward registered nurses who are new to perinatal nursing and work in labor and delivery or antepartum, gynecologic and mother-baby care. Content is appropriate for both new graduates and the experienced nurse. Experiences from the class are integrated into clinical skills through mentoring and bedside coaching in the clinical area over a 12-week period.
