This formative simulation course is for healthcare practitioners preparing to become certified in placement of central lines.
It includes prerequisite modules located in the SiTEL Learning Management System titled, "MedStar Health Central Line Education for Physicians and Advanced Care Practitioners".
The course includes basic ultrasound related to central line placement, familiarization and technical hands on practice with the equipment in the central line kit, basic overview and practice regarding pre-procedural preparation and documentation, practice with maintaining sterile technique throughout the procedure and practice with line placement using simulation task trainers.
MedStar Health has put this formative course into place as a patient safety initiative in order to prepare practitioners who will be placing central lines giving them hands on practice of skills needed and enabling them to become familiar with the specific technical skills they will be expected to demonstrate or verbalize during testing.
MedStar Health joins those best practice central line programs in ensuring education is in place for practitioners that empowers them to put the patient safety first.

- At the completion of the course, the participant will be able to demonstrate the use of the ultrasound machine in identification of physical landmarks related specifically to the insertion of central venous lines.
- At the completion of the course, the participant will be able to identify and properly handle the contents of the central line insertion kit.
- At the completion of the course, the participant will be able to discuss and demonstrate central line preparation and insertion techniques including maintaining a sterile field.
