The Workplace Violence Prevention Training Program includes key aspects needed to provide front line clinical, administrative, and support staff with the knowledge and skills to recognize, address, diffuse, de-escalate, and if necessary, defend against violent and potentially violent incidents. Participants will be provided with tools for effective communication to use during a behavioral crisis event.
The training will include:
- Recognition indicators of a developing crisis (aggressive or potentially aggressive behavior)
- Early recognition and verbal de-escalation tools. The class curriculum also focuses on response to "flash points" and "triggering events"
- Verbal de-escalation techniques, including interactive scenario exercises focusing on the art of "active listening" and the "5 steps of verbal de-escalation".
Objectives
- Explain and respond to the behavioral continuum of others, from the calm individual to one who is in a crisis that could lead to aggressive or assaultive behavior.
- Identify key strategies for maintaining a more therapeutic environment for preventing behavioral and aggressive events.
- Summarize the how and when to use effective verbal de-escalation techniques.
- Determine the steps one can take proactively to further enhance own safety and security.
- Differentiate the legal and regulatory issues associated with the use of safe physical crisis intervention and the implication of restraints.
- Outline the proper documentation of a workplace violence situation to provide an accurate account of the event while providing a legal document that protects the staff member and the MedStar Health entity.
