Nurses, physicians, and APPs must all understand how to safely assess, order, and eventually discontinue restraints and seclusion for patients at risk of harming themselves or others. This brief module provides information to ensure that clinicians utilize restraints and seclusion in a manner that is both safe and in compliance with regulatory requirements.

- List examples of restraint alternatives and describe the purpose of alternatives to restraint use
- Describe examples of violent and non-violent behaviors warranting the use of restraints
- Explain the requirements for obtaining an order for restraints and/or seclusion
- Describe the application of restraints to violent and non-violent behavior
- State requirements for face-to-face evaluation for the application of restraints to violent and non-violent behavior
- Identify criteria for removal of restraints and/or seclusion
