Objectives

  • Define restraints and MedStar St. Mary’s policy regarding restraint use
  • Describe examples of behaviors warranting the use of Violent and Non-Violent restraints
  • Describe proper application of violent and non-violent restraints
  • Differentiate between the roles of a sitter for a 1:1 observation vs. constant observation
  • Explain the requirements for obtaining an order for restraints
  • Identify criteria for removal of restraints and/or seclusion
  • List examples of restraint alternatives and describe the purpose of alternatives to restraint use
  • Recognize roles and safety precautions for sitters
  • State the requirements for the face-to-face evaluation for violent and non-violent restraints
  • State the Safety Level at which a sitter is required
  • State who is able to perform the duties of a sitter
