This Pediatric Specialty course integrates current evidence-based science and best practice principles in
the provision of pediatric patient care in the ambulatory setting. The course is designed to enhance the
associate’s knowledge and clinical skills emphasizing high-quality, safe care of the pediatric patient in
alignment with MedStar Health’s Patient Safety Culture. The curriculum incorporates pediatric specific topics
such as developmental milestones, vital signs, review of systems, medication administration, procedures, and
positioning techniques. Various simulation stations will be employed to reinforce newly acquired skills, as well
as promote engagement and content retention.
Objectives
- State two anatomical differences of a child compared to an adult.
- Identify one emotional response of a school age child in a health care environment.
- Explain the importance of obtaining weights in kilograms.
- List two reasons why an infant less than 28 days old with a fever is at high risk for sepsis.
- Describe one symptom of an infant in respiratory distress.
- Recall two post-seizure safety interventions.
- Summarize the medication administration co-verification process.
- Locate the anatomic landmarks for a deltoid injection.
- Demonstrate one positioning technique for a toddler receiving a vastus lateralis injection.
- Demonstrate one positioning technique for a young child receiving a deltoid injection.
- Illustrate the procedure for obtaining a nasopharyngeal specimen on a four year-old child.
- Assemble equipment needed to provide oxygen support via non-rebreather mask to an adolescent.
- Demonstrate rescue breathing of an infant using a bag valve mask (BVM).
