The purpose of “The First 5 Minutes” is to improve patient outcomes by:
- Providing faculty-led, simulated emergency training in a variety of locations outside the simulation center
- Practicing identification of cardiac arrest and implementation of appropriate initial emergency response measures.
- Standardization of behaviors for intitiating care in a code blue cardiac arrest situation.
- Assess staff perception of the simulation training and their comfort and confidence pre and post training when encountering a patient that is unresponsive.
Objectives
- Activate the emergency response system.
- Demonstrate appropriate placement/application of defibrillator pads.
- Demonstrate effective SBAR communication to the healthcare team
- Demonstrate initiation of effective cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
- Demonstrate recognition of cardiac arrest within 10 seconds.
- Demonstrate use of defibrillator to analyze/appropriately shock patient within 2 minutes.
