Objectives

  • Describe the mechanism by which CTE occurs. CTE results from sub-concussive blows to the head over time which causes the release of tau protein and results in progressive, irreversible brain damage.
  • Describe the 4 stages of CTE progression. Stage 1: No symptoms; Stage 2: Rage, Impulsivity and Depression; Stage 3: Confusion and Memory Loss; Stage 4: Advanced Dementia.
  • Describe 3 potential effects of CTE: Memory loss, confusion, impaired judgement, impulse control issues, aggression, depression, suicidality, parkinsonism and progressive dementia.
