Objectives

  • Perform a focused respiratory assessment and identify signs and symptoms of increased work of breathing and respiratory distress and failure.
  • Respond and intervene to provide supportive care and relieve work of breathing.
  • Choose the appropriate respiratory adjuncts (bulb suction, low flow wall oxygen, heated high flow, intubation) based on the respiratory assessment.
  • Implement patient and family teaching on the plan of care including the rationale and utility of respiratory equipment such as heated high flow and NIPPV.
  • Utilize the ongoing assessment to support the interdisciplinary team with weaning patients from oxygen support.
  • Develop and deliver a care plan that includes consideration of nutrition and intake and output.
  • Implement patient/family education including regarding supportive care for viral illness, medications, preventative care.
