New Hire Surgical Time Out/Universal Protocol and Debrief Attestation

Objectives

  • Know and demonstrate the importance/ rationale of the Time Out process
  • Perform the Time Out before injecting any medication AND after draping the patient but prior to the start of a procedure or incision
  • Cease all activity/movement, talking, music, etc., during the Time Out
  • Everyone is responsible for speaking up and expressing concern if the Time Out is not done correctly
  • Perform the correct Time Out Protocol for Pre-procedure and Post-procedure (Debrief, aka R.E.C.A.P.S).
  • Return to room with expectation for turnover time and concerns for the next patient
  • Equipment issues regarding updates to the preference card should be addressed at this time
  • Concerns about the current patient
  • Accurate count
  • Procedure & Wound Class confirmation
  • Specimen sheet signed by surgeon
