New Hire Specimen Handling Attestation

Understand the importance/ rationale of accurate documentation and handling of specimens and its impact on patient care, treatment, and outcomes
Thoroughly hand off information about specimens and follow protocol and appropriate documentation during change-of-shift/relief time
Ensure all electronic orders for Microbiology and Pathology are appropriately documented (RN only)
Ensure all handwriting and signatures on all Laboratory and Pathology sheets are legible (when applicable)
Ensure (double-check) that a patient label is placed on all paperwork and specimen containers and ensure the patient labels match the correct patient
Perform readback with the surgical team (i.e., scrub personnel, attending surgeon) to ensure patient information and names of specimens are correct
Ensure specimen reconciliation is included in the surgical debriefing
