Description
Cervical Disc Replacement: State of the Art and Future Direction will address the indications and progression of surgical interventions of the cervical spine to maximize recovery and function. Topics include the history of cervical spine methods and rationale, the concept of adjacent segment disease, an introduction of cervical disc replacement and how the client and therapist benefit from this current approach.
Objectives
Participants will be able to:
- Name 3 historical indications for cervical fusion.
- Identify 3 differences between historical surgical methods to disc replacement.
- Describe the concept of adjacent segment disease as it relates to therapeutic recovery.
- Apply topics of recent landmark cervical disc replacement studies when educating clients.
- Improve therapist evaluation and screening for potential for spine consultation.
- Convert cervical disc replacement protocols into practice for best clinical outcomes.

Speaker
Oliver Tannous, MD is an orthopaedic spine surgeon at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. As a spine specialist, he utilizes state-of-the-art, minimally invasive and motion preservation techniques to treat conditions of the bones, discs, and nerves of the neck and back.
His clinical focus includes disorders of the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine, ranging from isolated disc herniation to complex deformities and failed surgeries. His research interests include optimizing patient outcomes after surgery and improving techniques for eliminating postoperative spinal infections.
