Description
This course is for the interdisciplinary health care team that manages the baseball athlete. This course will review interventions for common injuries and their associated rehabilitation and return to performance.

Speakers

• Leigh Ann Curl, MD is an orthopedic surgeon who combines her skills as a doctor with her interest and background in top-level athletics. Along with an appointment as assistant professor of orthopedic surgery at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, she was appointed orthopedic surgeon for the Baltimore Ravens. She is the first and only woman to be a team physician in the National Football League.
• Wiemi Douoguih, MD is an orthopaedic surgeon and a member of the MedStar Orthopaedic Institute. He serves as Regional Medical Director of MedStar Sports Medicine and Director of Sports Medicine at MedStar Washington Hospital Center's Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. He is an Assistant Clinical Professor at Georgetown University. Dr. Douoguih serves as Regional Medical Director of MedStar Sports Medicine. He also serves as the Senior Orthopaedic Consultant for the Washington Wizards (NBA) Washington Mystics (WNBA) and as Medical Director for the Washington Capitals (NHL). He is a consultant for the Baltimore Ravens (NFL) and NFL Players Association. He served as Medical Director and Head Team Physician for the Washington Nationals (MLB) for seven years, up through 2015. Dr. Douoguih has also served as assistant team physician for the Washington Redskins, Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Dodgers, Los Angeles Kings, Anaheim Angels, and Anaheim Mighty Ducks, as well as for the teams of Loyola Marymount University. He has successfully operated on numerous professional and elite athletes in a wide range of sports. Dr. Douoguih is board certified in orthopaedic surgery and holds a subspecialty certification in sports medicine. He specializes in arthroscopic treatment of the shoulder, elbow, and knee. An award-winning researcher who has published multiple articles in peer reviewed journals, he has lectured internationally on various sports medicine topics. Dr. Douoguih was an All-American and Hall of Fame lacrosse player at Washington and Lee University. He also won a national judo championship in 2001.
• Alex Milton, MED, CSCS, ELDOA 1, FRC, PES has been a part of the strength and conditioning staff for MedStar Health sports performance since 2018. He specifically oversees the operation and management of the Phase Three / Return to Play program, where he assists physical therapists returning athletes back to play after sustaining a major injury. Alex earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Rhode Island, where he graduated with honors. Alex also obtained a Master of Education with a concentration in sport leadership from the Virginia Commonwealth University. Prior to working at MedStar Health, Alex worked at eight division one universities, including but not limited to, Wake Forest University, University of Kentucky, and the University of North Carolina. He currently works out of the Hunt Valley and Cockeysville locations.
• Steve Svoboda, MD, Colonel (retired) 23-year military career Steven Svoboda, MD is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon with a sub-specialty certification in orthopedic sports medicine. Dr. Svoboda is associated with MedStar Georgetown University Hospital and MedStar Washington Hospital Center and serves as a team physician for the NHL’s Washington Capitals, NBA's Washington Wizards, and Prince George’s County High Schools. An accomplished clinician-scientist, Dr. Svoboda firmly believes that evidence-based outcomes assessment of patient care is essential to improving orthopedic sports medicine care. During his military career, Dr. Svoboda served as Chief of Orthopedic Sports Medicine, Brooke Army Medical Center and the Director of Orthopedic Research, US Army Institute for Surgical Research, both located at Fort Sam in Houston, Texas, from 2005-2007. He was the Program Director of the COL John A. Feagin, Jr. Sports Medicine Fellowship, the Department of Defense’s only program of this type, at West Point from 2009 to 2017. In that role, he was responsible for training all of the Orthopedic Sports Medicine sub-specialists in the US Army. University. He also won a national judo championship in 2001.
• Joey Mylott played division 3 baseball at Rochester Institute of Technology where he received his bachelor's degree in biomedical engineering. Joey then went on to complete his master’s degree in biomedical engineering at the Wake Forest School of Medicine. Joey worked and conducted research in the Wake Forest Pitching Lab during his graduate studies. Joey also served as a graduate assistant and a member of the baseball analytics team with the Demon Deacon baseball team. Joey works for the Baltimore Orioles in their Player Development department as their Biomechanist where he works with both pitchers and hitters.

• Chris Brandt, PTA, ATC, CSCS received a bachelor's degree in athletic training and sports medicine from Quinnipiac University. Chris also completed a physical therapy assistant program at Kent State. He is a certified athletic trainer and his rehabilitation specialties include ACL Return-to-Play Testing, Knee, Foot, and Ankle Therapy, Neck Pain and Lower Back Pain, Orthopedic Injuries and Conditions and Performance Enhancement.
• Meghan Dawson, PT, DPT, MTC, SFMA is a staff Physical Therapist at both our MedStar NRH Rehabilitation Network at Waugh Chapel and at our Athletic Performance Inc. (API) locations. Meghan received her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from the University of Louisville. She then went on to graduate with honors from the University of Saint Augustine for Health Science where she received her Doctorate of Physical Therapy, and earned a Manual Therapy Certification. Her special interests include ACL injury prevention and return to play, orthopedic conditions, and the management of running injuries.
• Lance Kelly, MPT, ATC is a Physical Therapist and Athletic Trainer. He works as Director of Professional and Elite Sports Therapy at MedStar National Rehabilitation Hospital. He received his B.S. from UNC Chapel Hill and his MPT from Shenandoah University before training and later practicing under Glenn Terry, MD and Champ Baker, MD at The Hughston Clinic in Columbus, GA. He then opened Momentum Physical Therapy and Sports Enhancement and later became Clinic Director for Atlanta Falcons Physical Therapy Center. During his 23 years of experience in training, rehabilitation, and sports enhancement for youth, high school, college and professional athletes, he has had the privilege of working with members of the NFL, NBA, WNBA, MLB, PGA, LPGA, ATP, PBR, and NHL. Lance specializes in rehabilitation of all pre- and post-operative extremity injuries and manual therapy of the cervical and lumbar spine.
• Stephen Luca, MSPT, ATC, Director of MedStar Rehabilitation Network at Bel Air, 23 years of experience as a sports physical therapist and Certified Athletic Trainer. He obtained a Master’s of Science degree in Physical Therapy from Old Dominion University in 1991, and a Bachelors of Science in Kinesiological Sciences from University of Maryland at College Park in 1989 where he was a student Athletic Trainer from 1985-1989. He has worked as an associate to Phil Donley, PT, ATC, MS since 1996 in the screening and rehabilitation of Major League Baseball Players. Steve lectures extensively, locally and nationally, on S.I.C.K. scapula and GIRD of the shoulder and specializes in shoulder rehabilitation and the biomechanics of throwing injuries.
• Carter Mitchell, MD is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon who specializes in arthroscopy and treats all types of sports injuries, including injuries to the shoulder, elbow, knee, ankle, and foot. Dr. Mitchell has specific training in the treatment of cartilage defects of the knee with articular cartilage implantation and meniscal transplantation. In addition, he performs total joint replacement surgery of the shoulder, hip and knee. Dr. Mitchell has a specific interest in the throwing athlete and has published on UCL reconstruction with Dr. James Andrews. Additionally, he has conducted biomechanical research on meniscal repair. A native of Bethesda, Maryland, Dr. Mitchell graduated from St. Albans school. He attended Brown University and graduated with a degree in Law and Public Policy in 1997. He then conducted basic science research at the National Institutes of Health for a year before attending MedStar Georgetown University Hospital for medical school. Dr. Mitchell remained at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital for his general surgery internship as well as for his orthopaedic residency. After completing his orthopaedic training, Dr. Mitchell moved to Birmingham, Alabama to do a fellowship in orthopaedic sports medicine with Dr. James Andrews at the American Sports Medicine Institute. Dr. Mitchell is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons as well as the American Orthopaedic Society of Sports Medicine. He has been a team physician for the University of Alabama, the University of West Alabama, the Birmingham Barons AA baseball team, and Calera high school. He has covered many sports ranging from football, basketball, and baseball games to rodeo competitions. Dr. Mitchell and his wife, Katie, are avid sports fans and enjoy golfing, tennis and sailing.
• Tom Sutton, PhD, DPT, Regional Director graduated from the University of Southern California with a clinical doctorate in biomechanics and physical therapy. Tom is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist. Tom enjoys treating overhead athletes, runners, golfers, sports medicine and performance enhancement restoration.
