Central venous catheters (CVCs) are used for the administration of parenteral nutrition, long-term IV medications, and they provide access for hemodialysis and ultrafiltration. However, they can cause complications including central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs). This module focuses on the proper techniques for central line removal, complications associated with central line removal, and how these can be prevented. Only individuals who have received appropriate central line training are eligible to remove a central vascular catheter.
