Objectives

  • Discuss appropriate indications for supplementation and alternative feeding methods.
  • Discuss education and counseling services that can be provided to the breastfeeding parent.
  • Discuss maternal conditions that may have an effect on breastfeeding and/or contraindicated for breastfeeding
  • Discuss safe formula use and preparation.
  • Identify infant conditions that may hinder successful breastfeeding and discuss ways to promote a positive breastfeeding environment in these patient populations.
  • Identify medications and illicit substances that have an effect on breastfeeding and/or are contraindicated for breastfeeding.
  • Identify the anatomy of a breast, the physiology of milk production, and concerning findings during a lactation consult.
