Description
The course includes a 90-minute interactive lecture focused on prism adaptation treatment (PAT). This will enable attendees to update their knowledge about the mechanisms and clinical knowledge of spatial neglect on individuals with acquired brain injuries, especially stroke. The second half of the lecture will introduce attendees to the theoretical understanding of PAT and current evidence supporting its use of reducing spatial neglect and improving rehabilitation outcome.

Peii (Peggy) Chen, PhD is an assistant director at the Center for Stroke Rehabilitation Research of Kessler Foundation (KF), and independently directs the Spatial Attention, Awareness, and Ability Laboratory. Dr. Chen holds a research associate professor position at the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation in Rutgers University’s New Jersey Medical School. Dr. Chen’s career started as a student focused on human information processing and specifically the psychophysiological mechanisms of spatial attention (2002-2007, Penn State University). Her postdoctoral fellowship (2007-2009, Rutgers New Jersey Medical School) launched her career in rehabilitation sciences, expanding her research area to disorders of spatial attention, especially spatial neglect.
Dr. Chen has more than 15 years of experience in assessment and treatment development for spatial neglect through multidisciplinary collaborations with neurologists, physiatrists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, clinical psychologists, medical bioengineers, and software developers. Dr. Chen promotes knowledge translation from research to clinical practice and aims to accelerate the translation process by directly providing clinicians with tools that facilitate the delivery of evidence-based treatments. She is the lead developer of the Kessler Foundation Neglect Assessment Process (KF-NAP®), Kessler Foundation Prism Adaption Treatment (KF-PAT®), Kessler Foundation Spatial Retraining Therapy (KF-SRT®), Kessler Foundation Eye Movement Exercise (KF-EME), and the 3s Spreadsheet Test. While the KF-NAP and Spreadsheet test are functional tests for spatial neglect, the KF-PAT is a combination of treatment equipment and standardized procedures to facilitate PAT. Both treatment programs of the KF-SRT and KF-EME leverage the latest immersive virtual reality technology packaging visuospatial exploration and spatial-motor training into game-like activities.
Dr. Chen has led clinical research and clinical trials funded by federal grants (NIH, DoD, and NIDILRR), New Jersey State (New Jersey Commission for Brain Injury Research), and private funding agencies (New Jersey Health Foundation, Healthcare Foundation of NJ, Wallerstein Foundation for Geriatric Life Improvement, Sea Grape Foundation). She has published more than 60 peer-reviewed articles, 80% of which are related to spatial neglect and published in a diverse portfolio of journals both in the US and international. Dr. Chen is one of the founders of the International Group for Spatial Attention and Neglect Disorders (I-SAND) and Spatial Neglect Care Networking Group in the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine (ACRM), and a contributing member of the Extended Reality for Rehabilitation (XRRX) initiative. Dr. Chen has made a substantial contribution in the field of spatial attention and neglect disorders and will continue her effort pursuing further understanding of spatial cognition in neurorehabilitation.
