SLP Research Roundtable: Overview of Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders  Description Orofacial myofunctional disorders (OMDs) are defined as any abnormalities in the structure or function of the facial or mouth muscles. OMDs can affect people across the lifespan and may impact on how the muscles of the face and mouth are used for speaking, chewing, swallowing, and breathing. Despite its clinical significance, many practicing SLPs have limited education and experience with assessment of OMDs. This course will provide an in-depth review and discussion of the article "A one-page orofacial myofunctional assessment form: a proposal" (Paskay, 2012), which describes an in-depth orofacial myofunctional assessment protocol. The session will review assessment considerations for oral-motor functioning, speech, and swallowing in patients with OMDs. It will also identify other professionals as a part of the collaborative team for the treatment of OMDs. This course is relevant for medical SLPs working across settings, including acute care, inpatient rehabilitation, outpatient, and home health. Suggested Audience: SLP Difficulty Level Advanced – Includes in-depth theory, concepts, and applications of information and/or techniques that are presented beyond the Essential Level. Speakers Sandra Guevara, MA CCC-SLP has a bachelor’s degree in speech-language pathology with a minor in Spanish from Towson University. She completed her master’s degree in speech-language pathology and earned a Bilingual Certification in SLP from the University of Maryland. Sandra holds the following certifications: SPEAKOUT!® trained provider, Modified Barium Swallow Impairment Profile (MBSImP), and Simon Says Myofunctional Certified (In Process). Sandra is an outpatient SLP at MHPT in Olney, MD.  Anna Dickstein, MS CCC-SLP has a bachelor’s degree in cognitive science and Spanish from the University of Michigan. She completed her master’s degree in communication sciences and disorders from MGH Institute of Health Professions. Anna holds the following certifications: Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT LOUD), SPEAK OUT!, Modified Barium Swallow Impairment Profile (MBSImP), Certified Brain Injury Specialist (CBIS). Anna is a Program Specialist in Outpatient Education at MedStar Health Physical Therapy in Washington, DC. In this role, Anna engages in both clinical services and program development for student training initiatives and developing curricula for MedStar Health's Environment of Learning.
