This content will prepare the inpatient nurse to care for patients falling under the hospice umbrella on their inpatient unit. The unique expectations and goals of hospice care are discussed in detail, with a focus on the general inpatient hospital setting. At MedStar Washington Hospital Center, hospice care is conducted in collaboration with the hospice provider AccentCare®. To prepare nurses for this teamwork approach to hospice, the course will review the roles and responsibilities for MWHC nurse versus AccentCare® team members. The presentation reviews several domains of care nurses must consider when assigned a hospice patient: general hospice principles, pain management, symptom management, communication, anticipatory guidance, postmortem care, and interdisciplinary collaboration. show less
