About this Course: This immersive obstetric emergency simulation training program occurs throughout MedStar Health. It is designed to strengthen interdisciplinary teamwork, sharpen communication skills, and enhance clinical performance during high-risk maternal events. Through realistic, scenario-based simulations, participants will practice applying critical language, utilizing active call-outs and closed-loop communication, and maintaining shared situational awareness in rapidly evolving situations. The course emphasizes collaborative problem-solving and shared decision-making among nurses, providers, and support staff to ensure coordinated, safe, and timely care. By integrating structured communication strategies with hands-on clinical management, this training prepares teams to respond confidently and cohesively to obstetric emergencies, ultimately improving patient outcomes.

- Apply critical language to escalate care, ensure clarity, and reduce ambiguity during high-risk clinical scenarios.
- Demonstrate effective interdisciplinary teamwork by clearly defining roles, maintaining closed-loop communication, and coordinating actions during a simulated obstetric emergency.
- Engage in shared decision-making with providers, nurses, and support staff by openly discussing potential interventions, voicing differing viewpoints respectfully, and reaching consensus on the safest plan of action with the patient.
- Exhibit situational awareness by continuously reassessing the patient’s condition, recognizing early cues of deterioration, anticipating next steps, and verbalizing concerns to the team.
- Use active call-outs and read-backs to convey vital clinical information—such as maternal vital signs, fetal heart rate changes, medication administration, and elapsed time—to support shared situational awareness.
