Description
This course provides postpartum nurses and interdisciplinary team members with the knowledge and skills needed to prevent maternal and newborn falls. Participants learn how physiologic changes, medications, fatigue, and early mobility impact fall risk for both the birthing parent and the newborn, and how to apply evidence‑based strategies to maintain a safe environment throughout hospitalization.
The course, created by the 5D/F unit-based council as a PI project, emphasizes risk recognition, effective patient communication, and unit‑based safety practices that support safe ambulation, newborn handling, and family involvement. Through case scenarios, policy review, and practical demonstrations, staff gain confidence in assessing fall risk, implementing prevention bundles, and responding appropriately when a fall or near‑miss occurs.
Objectives
- Apply standardized fall‑risk assessment tools and document findings accurately.
- Demonstrate appropriate steps for reporting, escalating, and responding to falls or near‑miss events.
- Educate families on fall‑prevention expectations and reinforce safe behaviors in the patient room.
- Identify common maternal and newborn fall risk factors specific to the postpartum period.
