Objectives

  • Apply appropriate dressing and ensure hemostasis at the site
  • Assess the site post-procedure for bleeding, swelling, pain, or signs of infection
  • Demonstrate proper aseptic technique throughout the de-accessing procedure to minimize infection risk
  • Describe indications for de-accessing an implanted port, including completion of therapy and provider orders
  • Educate the patient on post-procedure care and when to report concerns
  • Identify required supplies and prepare equipment appropriately prior to the procedure
  • Perform correct flushing and locking technique per institutional protocol (e.g., saline and/or heparin lock)
  • Recognize and respond to complications, such as resistance during flushing, bleeding, or suspected catheter-related infection
  • Safely remove the non-coring needle while maintaining stabilization of the port
