Objectives

  • Adapt discharge of SMART for MedStar Hospital EDs.
  • Assess the literature on SMART and GINA guidelines.
  • Discuss discharge criteria and what outpatient pulmonary provides for these patients.
  • Identify a framework approach to treatment of mild to severe asthma exacerbations in the emergency department.
  • Review diagnosis criteria and alternative criteria of asthma in outpatient and ED settings as FVC response, biomarkers (e.g. eosinophilia), and clinical symptoms.
  • Review the pathophysiology of asthma, how it differs from COPD, and the epidemiology in the Maryland and DC population.
