About this Course: Learners will review pathophysiology, diagnosis, and clinical management of patients with Asthma in the emergency department (ED) with a review of SMART and how to operationalize SMART in the ED, covering insurance coverage, prescribing, and Mpages.

- Adapt discharge of SMART for MedStar Hospital EDs.
- Assess the literature on SMART and GINA guidelines.
- Discuss discharge criteria and what outpatient pulmonary provides for these patients.
- Identify a framework approach to treatment of mild to severe asthma exacerbations in the emergency department.
- Review diagnosis criteria and alternative criteria of asthma in outpatient and ED settings as FVC response, biomarkers (e.g. eosinophilia), and clinical symptoms.
- Review the pathophysiology of asthma, how it differs from COPD, and the epidemiology in the Maryland and DC population.
