About this Module: This course focuses on defining a central line infection, outlining the MedStar Health’s Central Line Infection Prevention Standards, the care of the patient receiving a central line, insertion, maintenance, and removal of a central line. Only individuals who have received appropriate central line training are eligible to assist with insertion, maintenance, removal and care for patients that have a central vascular catheter. show less
Objectives
- Apply central line-associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI) care management standards, including prevention procedures.
- Articulate the standards of practice surrounding central line removal including personnel, patient positioning, and complications.
- Describe the role of the nurse and the “Observer” during the central line insertion and removal procedures.
- Identify indications for central line placement in the clinical setting.
